With another death case reported in NTU where an Infocomm Project Officer was found hanged in his apartment last night, I suspect it’s too much of a coincidence.. Two deaths in less than a week!???
What more, both are from School of EEE in the Infoommunication Division. Curiosity got out of me and with the help of my friend, we did our own so called “investigation”
So, how are these two related?

David Hartanto Widjaja is a final year EEE infocomm student under the care of Assoc Prof Chan Kap Luk
Zhou Zheng, a project officer of Information Engineering.

David Hartanto Widjaja’s family doubts that he stabbed his lecturer and then killed himself. They suspect that he has been killed.

Zhou Zheng is a new Project Officer and he is just joined on March 2, the day of David’s incident. As far as I know, because I was also an ex-Project Officer in that lab (ISRL/S2-B3a-06), on the first day I joined, I need to find 3 Professors to approve that I will be stationed in that lab and to get the lab key. And of course, you need to walk around the professors office area to look for the profs. And, one of the prof is the Head of Information Engineering which is located at S1-B2c area, near the Prof Chan’s office which is in S1-B2b area. As I remember, on the day I joined, 10am to 11 am is the time when I was also looking for the profs on the day I joined. (The form need to be signed immediately because it is needed to get the Lab key)
So, my opinion is that person “might” be around the Profs office area at the time of David’s incident. I use the word “might” because this is just my speculations. And, my point is this person might be connected to David’s case also.

1. David passed away. David was from Laboratory S2-B3a-06.
2. Zhouzheng passed away. Zhouzheng was from Laboratory S2-B3a-06.Therefore being from Laboratory S2-B3a-06 caused them to pass away.
Does that sound logical to you? That conclusion is not valid. But that is also NOT the hypothesis here. The reasoning for a suspicion of linkage is not a logical one per se, but because two people dying at random from the same laboratory is a statistical anomaly.

I read before in Today’s paper that there was a contractor named Mr.Tuen or Mr.Suen, was believed talked to David while David was sitting on the parapet (before jumped down). Mr.Tuen then left David to ask help then only found David is no longer sitting there.
Is this for real?
And I read the news today, police are calling witnesses for interrogation. Maybe Mr.Tuen is one of them?

There are CCTV cameras along corridors, doorways and lift landings, surely the captured images will give leads to the police on the ‘before’ and ‘after’ of the unfortunate incidents. (Especially those installed along the corridor of professors’ offices.)

I’m not sure whether your statement is as credible as I’ve cross checked your ntu email address (which you’ve left behind). It says that you have already graduated from NTU in 2007.

why police didn’t detain prof chan until they finish investigation? why didn’t they follow standard investigation procedure for this case?

who are you? are you telling the truth? If yes, I think you should tell the police. btw what you do after u see this scene?? U help the professor or you follow david? Why you didn’t ask for help from other people? If you ask for help, why nobody prevent david from jump? If you really telling the truth, I think you are the key witness in this case.
I am on the side that believe David not stab professor, or even if he stab, it is because the prof cause him cannot control his anger, I dunno what happen inside, now only prof knows. I totally don’t believe that David stab the prof because of scholarship or FYP. It is nonsense. There must be another reason which cause him lost his control.
But anyway, I still wanna the truth being revealed. so if you responsible on what you say, pls go to report to police, unless you just come to create a story here.
I am very dissapointed with the Prof and NTU, cos even if he has no mistakes at all, it is David who lost his control, he still needs to come out to give an explanation to David’s family. Prof as an educator responsible more or less on this tragedy.
The whole situation can be pointed to the fundamental “use-and-dispose” mentality that many ntu professors have on final year project students, graduate students and even project officers. Just ask any project officer and see if they have any career progression after working for years, and if their work gets the due credit they should deserve. The work they do will only go to the credit of the professors who are under pressure to produce high impact factor publications (which leads to my later points). The same treatment goes for fyp students and also the postgrad students working under them.
Looking from a macro point of view, we need to basically ask why is there such a craze to be ‘top ranked’? The THE University ranking factors are obviously skewed towards the American universities and the extremely old universities (e.g. Cambridge) with good standing. With a short history and a definitely smaller pool of impactful alumni (which is also a factor in the THE ranking), NTU will never achieve and will never be able to compete on the same platform. Impact factor also differs from 1 field of research to another field of research. For example, bio-chemical-life sciences journals have impact factors of more than 20 while humanities and even operation research have impact factors of less than 1. Does that mean that subjects like humanities and operations research are useless? Now I hope all readers can see the REAL reason why there is this ‘push’ for the life sciences in Singapore. I know of many good universities and professors in Europe who just ignore this useless THE ranking system, but are still leading universities in their own rights. There is more than just ranking, e.g. the university culture. Is university life and university training just about a silly ranking? This will only result in implosion, and I am sure, more disasters will follow.
Also, another issue is the unconstructive reporting of the media. When unfortunate incidents like those in NTU happen, they go over to SMU to interview students who pretend to be counsellors. Do you think that is constructive and will it help to improve the ineffective processes deeply rooted within NTU? So are they implying that SMU is invulnerable to these incidents? I think the journalists need to show more objectivity and target to report the real information that the readers of the national newspaper want to know: the truth.
- Did David know something about the Professor or NTU that he shouldn’t know?
- Who is the owner of the knife? (prof or David)
- Is it right that David try to kill the Prof or despite of it?
- When was the tragedy actually happened? (detail time )
- Any one see david jump from the balcony or just find the dead body just lied on the ground?
- Why the family couldn’t see the dead corpse?
It’s strange that the family couldn’t allowed to see it.
- Is there any possibilities that the Singapore police try to hide something for the reputation of NTU?
- Why Mr Zhou need to suicide? He just work in NTU. Is that possible for a person that find a new job, get it and than suicide? Did he see something that he shouldn’t see?
There’s so many mystery in the case… It’s so complicated. May be it’s just not about the Professor but also NTU…

I dont want to generalize but for me with 2 student in the same university and same division have almost similar case, its showing that something went wrong with ntu…
and dont forget that there are some unsolved case which is happen in the past on other lecture or prof…

I believe that the reason why there are so many loopholes in the initial statement from Singapore media/ the Professor story is because such statement are not based on facts. Panic and adrenaline rush would not make a good partner when creating a lie.
More and more loopholes arise because people are getting restless and finding more and more discrepancies in statements made.
i will not make any judgements at this stage as investigations are still running, but the fact is that there are many discrepancies and an obvious attempt to cover up the facts by either singaporean gov’t or NTU.
and for goodness sake, why don’t the singaporean authorities just publish all the facts of their investigation… an image captured from a cctv, witness statements, and most important, the prof’ statement, or anything they find…
either way, this is a suicide case right?

i strongly believe that if a cctv footage is provided, all speculations will die by themselves, perhaps you can check whether the legendary suicide site was covered by a cctv, then please post here your finding.

and as i stated, i will not make any judgements towards the deceased or the prof. i wish for only the truth, and justice uphold.
last but not least, i would like to offer my condolences towards David’s and Zhou’s families, colleagues and frinds.

I dont want to make any judgments, but its clearly that something went wrong because its happened on 2nd March but until now no official statement from Singapore police department… at least they have to inform the progress of investigation!!!
one more thing… Zhou was found dead as suicide!!! he came from same university and same division, same laboratory, join as project officer on 2nd March (the day David die) and found dead after 4 days David die, its weird isnt it??? if its true that he was suicide, what if he was homicide????
From my point of view, Singapore media information also involved in this conspiracy, because if they did their job in professional, they would not writing like that before got official statement from the authority….

I beg to differ guys. If it was as simple as heart attacks, would it even hit the news like tsunami right now? For goodness sake that is heart attack. We have no control over our own body, isn’t that true? But the case we’re figuring out now involves ’stabbings’ and ’suicidals’. Both of them, so coincidentally from the same lab, were so coincidentally found dead in a week and it’s so so coincidental that their cases are listed as ’suicidal’. Till the verdict’s out, I’m nt going to make any assumption!
And to TWINKLE07′, if you’re so free and you’re just waiting for someone to entertain you, why don’t you just start using your tweeny weeny brain to think of ways of how to fake your apology so that it becomes a sincere one in case you get slam somemore.

My theory…. (but I can only speculate):
Project Officer Zhou and David were both in NTU EEE 1 year apart. While Zhou was a student, he had a relationship with Prof. After he graduated and left, Prof began relationship with David.
On the day Zhou came back to work as a Project Officer in NTU lab (someone should check in Prof was involved in the hiring process), David confronted Prof and stabbed him in a moment of emotional rage and then jumped/fell from the parapet.
Zhou, overridden by guilt, then took his own life.
