Somebody else’s birthday party

Despite the exams looming around the corner, Yin Sin and I was out for her friend’s birthday party at Toa Payoh in the evening.

We left 2 hours earlier before the party starts as I need to change SGD currency to USD at Mustafa Centre as Singapore’s currency may devalue soon and I’ll be needing the USD currency when I travel in Indochina for my grad trip. The rate given by Mustafa centre was quite good!
USD 1 -> SGD 1.508 for $50/$100
USD 1 -> SGD 1.505 for $10/$20

Anyway, the birthday party.

It was held at a place called Oleander Tower and as non-locals, was pretty hard for us to locate the place. We walked one big round to finally reach the place which was opposite CHIJ Sec School. After reaching the place, I think I’m the only person who do not know the birthday girl and well… I think it wouldn’t really going to be a fun thing for me. So, yinsin made a challenge for me.

I told her bout the self-fulfilling prophecy before and that we normally end up to what we believe we’ll end up as.
For example, if I think I won’t enjoy the party.. I’ll just sit by myself and not do anything thurs resulting myself not to enjoy the party
and if I think I’ll enjoy the party, I’ll go around, talk to people and making new friends, hence, enjoying the party. She didn’t really believe the theory..

So, I accepted her challenge. After eating the catered food at the party, I tried talking to some of the birthday girl’s friends.. Well, we did talk for a while but I guess it ended up in quite a weird way. The problem is, I don’t know the birthday girl and they didn’t really sound like they were eager to meet new people.

Well, after observing the condition of the room, I find it quite amusing as to why that’s the case. The room is separated into a few mutually exclusive groups. One group is the birthday girl’s secondary school friends; one is JC friends and one small bunch of NTU friends. And these group of people only talk amongst one another in their own group and not ‘breaking’ out of the group. I guess I was ‘breaking the rule’ and I wasn’t a very good friend I am not really a friend of the birthday girl.

So anyway, I went back to being the birthday girl’s friend’s boyfriend and tried explaining the constraint to her. But I wasn’t not really enjoying the party cause it seems like a lot of people were bored of their minds as well. Oh well, at least, there were some places to walk around (a very nice pool outside the place) and have the company of my girlfriend. I guess it doesn’t really matter much where I was.
