My parents came down on Monday night to attend my NTU convocation the following day (to be updated separately). It’s always nice to have family around. Makes you feel more at home even if I’m in a foreign country. As my parents have been in Singapore for quite a number of times now, I didn’t really take them anywhere to sight-see. Just around Hougang neighbourhood for dinner and such. My 2nd sister joined us at night after she went shopping with her high school friend. She was smart enough to find her way right up to my house’s door step!

Anyway, as my family complains that Singapore food is lousy, I took them to the nicer places to eat here. We went to Old Airport Rd for breakfast and my dad was astounded with the size of the place. At that time, only several shops were open. Think the busy-hour is only at night (or lunch). Can’t imagine what it’s like there at night. Must be busy bustling with hungry people.

Had lunch in Cafe Al-fresco in NTU right before the convocation event. Convocation wasn’t as exhilarating as I hoped it would be but that’s another story aside.

For dinner, we went to Melban Seafood at Ang Mo Kio. It’s the same one I went with my NTU friends the previous time. We wanted to go somewhere further (know of a place by Casuarina Rd) but it’s too far away and it was quite late at some time. They enjoyed the dinner! My sister was kind enough to treat all of us including jit-vern, Ian and his girlfriend, Melanie. Food was good and they really keep the food to a certain standard. Price was reasonable as well!

Felt like being in ‘holiday’ again but alas, have to continue working now. Till then..

I’ve got a new daily morning routine now. And it doesn’t need to take 14/21 days for it to be a habit. =p

0700: Phone Alarm Rings (Snooze it)
0709: Phone Alarm Rings again (Snooze it)
0718: Phone Alarm Rings once more (Snooze it and prepare to wake up)
0720: Get up, pee and brush teeth
0727: Go down to the kitchen, pour some milk and prepare breakfast
0736: Go back up to the room to groom myself and get dressed
0745: Go back down and eat the breakfast
0755: Wash whatever utensils that I used
0800: Leave for work

There! Simple enough for my daily routine when I need to go to my office at Serangoon North

It’s just my 2nd day of work and I already feel dead tired..
Today and yesterday were very contrasting.

On the first day, I had nothing to do. Bored to the very end. That’s because my ‘mentor’ aka colleague was busy with meetings that he wasn’t in the office the entire day.

But today, he finally had time and it was information overload. Background theories and framework all in just a few hours. Attended my first meeting and will have another one on Thursday and one more on Friday.

Guess my job will be pretty demanding. I wonder if I can keep up with writing my blog. I know my ‘dailypics’ is dying.. lol.

Have been doing a lot of shopping and room decorating lately.

Bought coloured card boards from popular, stick ‘decorations’ that I brought over from NTU. Even bought full body mirror for $9.90 from IKEA, storage boxes, and mattress.

I kinda like the place here. It’s relatively near town and the east side of Singapore. Like for example, there’s a direct bus to IKEA at Tampines which takes around 30min there. A direct bus to Changi Airport and also a 45min direct bus to woodlands interchange.

Will begin my work tomorrow. Have to settle employment passes and hopefully, can apply for my PR soon. Internet connection’s real bad here.. haha.. Soon will have a good and stable one! Can’t wait…

A few ‘major’ things to buy this year; A desktop and a bike. =)

Spent the night at Soo Fan’s place to share a cab to LCCT at 6am. Met up with the rest of the people at the airport to begin our journey to Cambodia and Vietnam.
air-asia

The moment we stepped out from the airplane, we had nothing in mind – we don’t know where to go or where tos tart. The only thing we know is that we needed a transport to get to the heart of the town.

We were greeted in a friendly manner by our van driver (aka taxi) after we purchased our USD$10 transport to town for the 6 of us. There, he ‘offered’ to be our day-tour-guide where he’ll drive us around in his van. We didn’t know what to think or expect so we just agreed to listen to what he had to offer. After bringing us to a few guest houses and hotels, after which we stayed at a place called Angkor Voyage Villa for $7 per person, we told him of our planned itinerary. Little did we know the ‘mistake’ we’ve done by hiring a day tour guide. It’s damn expensive and the places he ‘recommends’ to us are not cheap at all. But what’s done is done and we hired him for two days at USD$40 per day.

  • Tonle Sap
  • It’s about 30min ride from Psaar Cha (the place we lived) to the Tonle Sap river. We ‘bargained’ to USD$10 for a 1.5 hours boat ride to see the fresh water lake which happens to provide Cambodia 80% of their source of protein.

It’s an eye opener for us to look at a civilization living in the river. Their houses, schools and shops are atop of boats where their mode of transportation is either swim or by a small motor boat. They do everything on this river, from washing food, plates, clothes, body to playing, pee and shit.

We rode through a fishing village first before heading out in the open at Tonle Sap lake. When out in the open, it seems like an endless sight of water. No obstacles, no buildings, no islands and very few boats within our line of sight. It’s like a wasteland of murky water.

We visited a few shops and dropped by in a school where tourists can make donations to buy stationaries and books for the children there.

  • Artisan d’Angkor
  • We visited this place where workshops to restore the Angkor temples are at. The workers there are dumb and deaf and they carve very beautiful sculptures.

We had a tour guide bringing us around the different places in the workshop and how the statues are being made. From the stones, to the drawings, the patterns, carvings, painting and then the finishing. Beautiful works they have there.

  • Sunset at Phnom Bakheng
  • We purchased our one-day Angkor Pass for USD$20 in the evening and right after that, our driver took us to see the sun set at Phnom Bakheng.

Phnom Bakheng is a temple sitting on top of a mountain and was built at the end of the 9th century. It was a 20-min climb to the top of the hill. While climbing up, we saw alot of ruins left by the Angkorians.

For me, it’s a sad sight as much of the carvings have faded and the monuments ‘deteriorating’. The carvings are shallower and there are many statues not in its place. Anyhow, the top is quite a grand sight and we waited there for the sunset…

That’s the end of our first day. We ate at a local cafe where food is USD$1. Our first ‘cheap’ place to eat where the menu doesn’t have english words. Have to rely on our driver to order for us.
