It’s the last day of CNY and my NTU juniors (now final year already) organized a steamboat dinner in celebration of Chap Goh Mei. Unfortunately for me, the thing was all the way back in NTU.

There were 17 of us, where most are final years staying in new hall area. Yi Chin, Ariel, Sein Chyi prepared most of the food while the rest of us waited for the food.. haha.. All the rice cookers were malfunctioning and we ‘cooked’ the steamboat food on the stove. Thanks to the cooks,

We had lots of vege,

vege

and lots of meat balls. Teng Seng made very good tom yam soup..

balls

Shaun brought his lou sang from I forgot where..

lousang One thing that we learned from experience is to label our bowls. So not to mix them up with another person’s bowls.. I did the labelling of bowls!

bowls There were lots of teasing (mainly on me), nonsensical talkings and well, the usual NTU stuff.. haha.. Felt like being a student again. Many of us there are a in pairs with the exception of some few eligible ones who refuse to go into one.

group 1

We ended with the lamest lou sang ever..

Lou Jiao Lou Sang

There weren’t any well-wishes. Just plain shouting and missing chopsticks.

Anyway, it was fun being part of the NTU-MSA again. Hope there’s one last one before they graduate from NTU. ;)

I think this is one of the rare occasions where we can get to see almost everyone who have been part of the MSA family.

The people from my batch, the one and two year my seniors… Haven’t seen them like in ages.

The theme of this event was “Rhythm of the Past” and naturally, there were performances that involves cultural stuff like singing and dancing. I was involved in this event as one of the choir members who will be performing that night. In case you didn’t know, I’ve been ‘part’ of the Hall 8 Choir group since my 2nd year although I’m not from that hall. More like a voluntary thing; something fun to do that is non-academic.
We’ve been invited to perform for that night and we sung 4 songs; “Just A Single Voice”, “Ye Lai Xiang”, “The Gift” and “Malaysia Medley”

There were also a piano performance, a harmonica group performance and dance performance.

But the fun part isn’t here. It’s all the photo taking with your fellow friends.
With all the dressing up, it’s only appropriate to take a good picture of yourself right? hahaha

All dressed up

All dressed up

Besides, it marks as another memory for the future; how we look like when we were younger.. lols

Shall start reminisce a bit..

Merdeka Night 2005
The theme was Back to School and we had to dress up in our high school uniforms. Was my first year as a freshie and it was quite alright i think.

Merdeka Night 05 (by P3rSeUs)

Merdeka Night 2006
The theme was Mazquerade and I was the Chief Programmer at that time along with Xian Ching and Lai Fai. It was something different for MSA as it now involves more ’sophistication’ rather than just gather and hang out. The venue was very nicely done and It’s more performance intensive with just a few games due to restriction of dress-code.

Merdeka Night 2007
The theme was “Colours of Malaysia” and people come in the colours found in the Malaysia Flag. I was in the dance performance “Rokkugoh”. I think it was quite good.. and the ‘final year’ sketch was pretty commendable. In general, I didn’t really enjoy it that much cause I don’t really have any strong memories regarding it. Maybe just a game where we have to pass bananas in between our legs… =/

Merdeka Night 2008
The theme this year is Musical!. Participants are to dress up to one of the 4 genres, i.e. Rock, Oldies, Hip Hop and Jazz.

Again, I was in a performance that resembles “Stomp” where we make music out of household items; pails, wok chan, cups, spoon, fork

Personally, I think the dance was great, the “Melaka Merdeka” sketch was also great and of course, the Stomp Performance! It’ll be my last performance and participation as a MSA member.
Over the past few years, I think I was pretty active in MSA.

  • MSA Main Comm for Publicity and Publications for 2 years
  • GL for FOC 2006
  • Chief Programmer for Merdeka Night 2006
  • Programmer for FOC 2007
  • SA for FOC 2008
  • Performed for ICFF for 2 years.

Can’t really remember the other details….

Okay, back to topic….
That day itself, I didn’t know what to wear for Merdeka Night 08′. Was chatting with De Zien during rehearsal and spontaneously, we decided to SUIT UP for the day where we pakat with Zhi Sin, Wai Seng and Yi Wang too!

And here’s the result.

Also, I had to change to a different entire for my performance.

Below is the performance video by us…. =)

Overall, this year’s Merdeka Night was quite good. Too bad, can’t see how the other coming Merdeka Nights will be.

IMHO, this year’s Merdeka Night was a great success. The theme is “Colours of Glory” and the participants are to wear clothes based on 4 primary colours of Malaysia’s flag, i.e. red, yellow, blue or white. The emcees were great, the preparation was all very well done. The performances; the Sketch, Jam Band, Cat Walk, Rukkugoh Dance and the MK Dance were all very well done. Sketch this year was done by the year 3s and year 4s. The sketch was called “ninja tortoises” where combined together, they have to defeat the 4Rs. Rompak, Rogol, Rasuah and Rosak! It was funny and quick-witted. Think It’s one of the best sketches for Merdeka Night so far.

Me, Yi Wang (event manager), De Zien and Elaine (photographer, supposedly)

Even the games were not bad at all. We played “simon says”, pass the bananas. There was an item where the instructions were given out in Malay. Lol. And I can’t believe I forgot to mention bout food! Food was catered from Canteen 5. Surprisingly, the food was marvelous. Canteen 5 is a newly opened canteen in NTU under a new management. So, I suppose to build up their reputation, they have to serve good food. Not like last year, where we catered from can 4. The food was just so-so and the service provided by them was lousy. Even during FOC, we catered from Café by the Quad and it was lousy.

Me and Hon Yoong with our dinner

I took part and performed in the Rukkugoh Dance. It’s quite funny as we got the songs and dance steps from YouTube, performed by a Japanese group called Super Junior T. The dance moves were silly, funny and stupid. Nevertheless, it’s all for the pleasure and entertainment of the audiences. So, we didn’t really mind although it doesn’t really look that professional.

The Rokkugoh Dance people

And of course, the participants themselves were very ‘on’. They can be played, know how to play and well… they’re just great! Freshies this year, as I’ve said before are very enthusiastic. They can take their own initiative to lighten up the atmosphere or at least, some of them would. Anyway, all’s well, ends well. I wonder what would be in stored for next year’s Merdeka Night. It would be my final one.

Crazy seniors (3rd years and 4th years) getting all hyped up

The actual FOC passed by with just a blink of an eye. By the end of senior camp, the actual one seems to be long and dreadful… Somehow, it turned out otherwise.

Day 1

Day 1 was rather relaxing… My job was to station myself in Hall 13 (my own hall) and just guide the freshies to check in their room and send them off to hall 8 to start off with their admin stuff. Having a stationary post wasn’t that bad after all if you have the right company. There was Ah Bee, Muh Tyng, Jia Ning and a few AMCISA people to accompany me. There was a total of approx 26 freshies in hall 13.. All staying in Block 61,62 and 63. None of any MSA members got Block 64.. =/

Human Mobile Signboard

At night was ice breaking games. That’s when all freshies were separated to their 8 different groups, namely Famiglia, Tarquinius, Genos, Lanza, Sulale, Kazoku, Porodica and Philia. All these names means “family” in different languages, and hence our theme “Ohana” which means, Nobody Gets Left Behind.

Day 2

The handling of admin stuff continues. This time, programmers have their own ‘break’ and skipped them to prepare for our day programmes. We only joined the Professor Talk, and Lai Fai’s Indoor Games at night. We had Pass the Precious, Human Pinball, Thou Shalt Not Pass and some cup retrieving game.. ^-^ Oh, they also had banner drawing before that…

Day 3

This is where the “actual” programme start in my opinion. The previous 2 days were just to warm them up. In the morning, we had the AMCISA Combined Games. We played water games, built human walls, burst balloons, and walking chairs. The I think the main item is to hand paint the Malaysia map banner and take a ‘family’ picture at the SRC Grand Stand.

After the combined games, we had SP (secret pal) talk where it’s time for seniors to have their fun. We would blindfold the freshies, and pair them up with their SP and the seniors will disturb them.. lol.. we would take branches, twigs or bare fingers to roll their skin. Make the couples hold each other hands. But as there were uneven ratio of boys and girls, there were a few boy-boy couple. Those were really funny… haha

Poor Girl… *grins*

Jealous boyfriend…

Then, we had a short session of photohunt. The amount of time was cut down so much that I only managed to lead the group to complete 4 out of 8 places. After that, there’s where the ‘fun part’ comes in… “SP WALK” aka “GHOST WALK”

My role was to guide and blindfold the freshies from the holding area to the “SP Room” where 3 ghosts will linger there. It was a tiring, yet fun job.. to see how freshies would feel the eeriness from all the screaming in the vicinity.

Did they realize that there’s a ghost next to them???

Day 4 – Lost Day

It’s similar to my year’s Amazing Race where groups will have to travel around Singapore solving clues. This year, they made it in such a case that there was a missing main commer and groups have to collect clues along the way to identify who that person is. The 3 main places for this game are Orchard, City Hall and Fort Canning Park. Unfortunately, it rained halfway but all groups were in FCP by then. So, all of them gathered under a huge tent and do their own stuff. This would imply singing (no wonder the rain never stopped), cheering, playing lame games, plain chit chatting and the such. We even had a cheer fight in the small area.

Us programmers wearing all blue

At night, there was a ‘dinner buffet’ in NTU. Actually, it’s just like an ordinary meal to me. The only diff is that, we have to scoop our own food, extra a few dishes, and the dishes are warmer.. that’s all.. ooh.. and the freshies get to replenish their food.. but not the seniors though.. cause we knew that there wasn’t enough for everyone…

Day 5 – Sentosa and SP Games

The final day and the “most important” day… Under the leadership of Miss Elaine Tam, the day5-ers (me included) managed to make it into a success! Despite many unwanted circumstances. We had 4 different beach games under light rain, namely Bomber Run (Galah Panjang), Musical Splash, Water Captain Ball and Entangled. We even allocated free time for everyone to dunk people into the ocean. Although there were a case where a member of the programmers had hypothermia, he managed to recover quickly and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves at the beach.

Posing in front of “MSA ‘07″ Sand Sculpture

At night, we had SP Games and Finale. We played Tele Match and Flame of Love for the games. To reveal each other’s SP, we had a rule where the guy had to make the girl smile to ‘reveal’ whether she’s his SP or not. Although there were a little of chaos, all’s well end’s well.

Finale was great. With sketches (commercials), award giving ceremony and closing ceremony… like every other year, we had a mini clubbing session. This time, the venue was different compared to the past few years as it is now held in LT2. All in all, it was a great camp. Though we did not have enough sleep and rest, it was all worth it to see so many happy faces among the freshmen.
