Two weekends away from Singapore

It’s the month of August; Singapore is having its National Day and the Youth Olympic Games. Things are starting to slow-down at work and I took the opportunity to be back home for the weekends!

Over the Singapore national day weekend, I was back in Ipoh with Yin Sin to take some time-off from work. It was a good break. I really slept a  lot at home. And my mum prepared a lot of food for me!

But one surprising was that I actually bumped into a bunch of friends that I used to always hang out with. On the morning I reached Ipoh while having breakfast in old town at 630am, three very familiar figures walked into the same shop for breakfast;  ; Gary, Kelvin and Ben! They were out the whole night for their final gathering as everyone is to leave Ipoh – Gary to Sabah, Kelvin to Nepal and Ben to Canada. The four of us used to be called the 4 stooges as Miss Bella from our Sunday School would say. When they bumped into me, we said that it’s God’s fate to ‘reunite us’ in that ungodly hour.

I joined them for that morning while my parents went back home. Had a good chat with them and talked about the good ol’ times. Time really flies. All of us have got bigger stomachs already. haha..

For the rest of the other days, I was at home sleeping and eating most of the time. My mum would them pamper her kids with nutritious food. One of the things prepared was bird’s nest!

The following weekend, (this weekend at the time of posting), I’m in KL for some business-related matters. I guess it was bad planning that I had to come back in two different weekends when I could have settled everything one shot at one weekend. But oh well…

Here I am, posting my blog from mBuji Cafe. It has more promotions now with newer selections of food and desserts! Will take this opportunity in KL to meet up some of my friends who are here in KL. Some of them, I haven’t seen them in ages. Too bad I won’t have enough time to meet up with all of them…

PC Show Weekend

I’m amazed how the people in Singapore can contribute to the sales of PC Shows/IT Fairs when it comes around in about once every 3-4 months! It’s like, there’s always a lot of people who need new PC, new Laptops, new cameras… I wonder when it will be a time when everyone has everything and there is nothing left to buy… Unless the Product Cycle is so short that people need to change their desktops every 2 years…

Anyway, I was there on Saturday to roam about PC Show and also to help Ian and Mel to buy new desktop and laptop…  And thanks to hardwarezone forum, I get to do some quick browsing to look at some of the highlights that they have. They are people who are crazy good enough to upload all the PC Show brochures up on the net.

brochures I found some interesting stuff that I’d like to get but shouldn’t give in to the techy/geeky ‘impulse’. i.e the Media Player (a box with networking capabilities that can stream videos, play videos directly on your tv) and the NAS (Network Attached Storage). Oh well, shall wait till I’m a bit more richer to buy all these stuff..

Of course, I try not to be too influenced with all these stuff and only stick to following around Ian/Mel with their laptop/desktop hunting. So, after about 3 hours of shopping, we ended up buying a MacBook Pro and a Lenovo Desktop.

Finally, Ian now has a desktop. Didn’t know how he survived with his laptop from his 1st year uni.

Yin Sin’s 23rd Birthday

After my exam has ended, I have very little time to plan for my gf’s birthday. Her birthday is on a Friday and I had to work on that day. Luckily I had some time to buy her birthday present after my papers on Tuesday.

On Thursday night, I bought her a birthday cake and ‘hid’ it in the fridge. Then, I sadly told her that I didn’t have the time to buy any birthday cake. She was rather sad at about 11-plus pm cause she’s not gonna have any cakes… Little did she know, by the stroke of midnight (or a few minutes after that), me and the rest of the guys in the house switched off all the lights and out comes a birthday cake!

She was very surprised with the cake and her mood turned around after that. haha

The guys were nice enough to stay up late to have the mini-celebration with her. Right after eating the cake, the guys went off to bed.. But not for Yin Sin. Well, I kinda told her that I didn’t get any presents for her too! But then, I planted the presents around the house for her to find. I gave her some ‘clues’ to look for her presents; something like a treasure hunt. Well, of course it isn’t very hard cause it’s meant to give her the presents. There were 3 gifts in total!

yinsin-present

All hand-wrapped (I suck at wrapping presents) with very nice wrapping papers. Recently, she had this ‘hobby’ of cooking/baking things in the house. She would spend hours looking at food blogs and baking recipes on the web. So, I got her 3 very colourful cookbooks with beautiful photographs in it.

We slept late that night cause she was excitedly reading the cookbooks until we forgot the time…

On Friday night after my work, I took her to a very nice cosy little restaurant called Pasta Inc located at Jalan Besar. It’s an Italian Restaurant which has a nice romantic ambience. The food there was absolutely great! Though their selection wasn’t that much, but the taste is very good… Their gravy is splendid.

We ordered White Asparagus for our starters. The gravy has a very rich olive oil/cheese taste. Can’t really describe it cause not sure what it contains.

For our main course, we had Jumbo Prawn Spaghetti and a Ravioli with beef fillings.

The Jumbo Prawn Spaghetti tastes like Aglia Olio but it tastes rather nice. For the Ravioli, I fell in love with the gravy. It has a very rich blue cheese taste. The beef fillings are great as well!

They also have very friendly staffs and they would give good recommendations to us.

yinsin-pasta After dinner, we walked around the area and some light shopping at City Square Mall.

On Saturday, we went out to Joo Chiat Road for lunch! Luckily, Jit-Vern had his car that weekend and was kind enough to drive us there. We went there for Prawn Mee~! One of Yin Sin’s favourite food. The Joo Chiat Prawn Mee Stall had good reviews and we decided to give it a try. Albeit getting lost a few times, we managed to find our way there!

The prawn noodle ($3.50) was.. well, nothing to shout about but definitely better than the average prawn noodles in Singapore.

prawn-noodle Jit-Vern drove the rest off after lunch but Yin Sin and I walked around the area to explore around. Unfortunately, it rained shortly after that and we kinda got stuck at Tanjong Katong Complex. It has a very old ‘mall’ feeling but little did we know, it turned out to be rather interesting! The place is damn good if you just bought a new place. It has loads of interior design shops, furniture shops, hardware shops and carpet shops! We also found a nice baking stall which sells quite a bit of stuff there.

In a nutshell, although it’s a simple celebration but it’s good enough for a couple where they can spend their time together and enjoy each other’s presence. I always enjoyed exploring new places and she too, like that kind of stuff. Maybe next time, we’ll just randomly go to ‘unchartered’ places like what we used to do when we were back in NTU. Till then….

What’s your hook line?

Recent Life Events

“I’ve been busy studying for my CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) exam for the past few days. My paper is on Tuesday and I’m trying my best to cram as much information as possible.. Luckily there’s a long weekend for me to study..”

The other day I was attending a course and something struck me – the trainer was asking this question “What’s your hook line?”. That is, what is ‘interesting’ about you? It’s like a pick-up line but instead of picking up girls, it’s a line that you tell people something interesting about yourself.

I used to have something interesting about me… I picked up photography, I write blogs, I sing, I dance, I always like explore new places to look for good food… But now, all these things seems to have fade away since I’ve started working. All these working and studying has really been taking up a lot of my everyday time… I think I’m trapped in the journey of attempting to climb the corporate ladder.

It’s about 10.5 months since I started working and I guess I’m more or less stabilized and familiarized with my working life. (but sometimes there are a few surprises here and there)

I think it’s about time to resume some of my used-to-be passions. Although it may not have any tangible ROI (return-on-investments), it makes your life more interesting and fruitful. There’s actually intangible returns from all these.

It’s time to learn to find time…

Room Shifting, Room Rearranging

As the title goes, my whole of Saturday is about shifting and rearranging of rooms; two different rooms though.

Room Shifting

That’s for Yin Sin’s last day in hall for the semester. So, I helped her shift her stuffs out from her room.
Some of the stuff is to another friend’s room in different halls. Some, is stored in the common area (limited storage area though)
And the remaining is stored in my room. Surprisingly, my room is able to fit the rest of her other stuff without much impact to the aesthetic value of my room – which doesn’t  have much to begin with anyway….

Room Rearranging

The rearrangement of my room has got nothing to do with the additional stuff into my room. Have always wanted to do that cause my computer is right by my window.
To look at the monitor in the afternoon, it’s sometimes quite glaring and uncomfortable… So, I’ve shifted my table to the side. It’s much better this way actually… I now can watch shows from my bed, and also see who is walking outside with just a small peek to the right!

Oh, I’ve also reformatted my computer. It’s been acting crazy for the past month or so. Everytime I need to switch on my computer twice for it to load into my windows. The first time, will always fail. It’ll get stuck at the windows boot screen. Then everytime I tried to defrag my hard disk, I get the BSOD. I can’t even scandisk my hard drive. It’ll just get stuck there.
Hopefully after I reformat, it’ll all be okay. Will give a few days of trial.

And there goes my weekend… Well, at least it’s been fruitful…
Now, it’s back to studying…. I’ve a technical paper on 1 June… =(
